EXHIBITED Keepers of the Flame Fisher Gallery, University of Southern California, LA, 1990 LOT NOTES Ivan Drozdov is an important Socialist Realist and Revolutionary artist. Having trained initially as in icon painter, Drozdov went on to study painting at the Penza Art Insitute from 1889-1903, after which he studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts under Makovky, Repin, and Savinsky. Drozdov was actively exhibited as of 1907, and toured Italy, France and Germany on a stipend from the Academy. After the Russian Revolution, living in Leningrad, Drozdov became well known for his historical paintings on Revolutionary themes, as well as themes of the construction and development of the USSR, as in the present painting. He was a very active participant in the AKhRR (Association of Revolutionary Russian Artists) and headed the Leningrad branch of the AKhRR as of 1939.
