Arden, New York (purchased from the above auction)Mrs. Louise Griswold (1843-1923) was the wife of New York State Senator Stephen Morrell Griswold (1837-1916) and author of A Woman's Pilgrimage to the Holy Land; or Pleasant Days Abroad: Being Notes of a Tour through Europe and the East, (Burr & Hyde, Hartford, 1871). Stephen and Louise Griswold were influential and active citizens and close friends of Henry Ward Beecher, the minister of Plymouth Church in Brooklyn Heights. In his book Sixty Years with Plymouth Church (Fleming H. Revell & Co., New York, 1907), Stephen Griswold recounted many of his experiences with Beecher, including when in 1865, he chaired a committee bringing Beecher and other influential New Yorkers to Fort Sumter to preside over a ceremony ordered by President Lincoln re-raising the United States flag over Fort Sumter.Louise Griswold's book, A Woman's Pilgrimage, recounts her experiences on the now famous Quaker City excursion of 1867. The Quaker City excursion was a five-month long trip to the Europe and the Holy Land and was organized by members of the Plymouth Church.
