A black and white wire photograph of Muhammad Ali and Sonny Liston from 1965. The photograph features Ali fighting Liston to retain the Heavyweight title at St. Dominic’s Arena in Lewiston, Maine, on May 25, 1965. The blow that ended this second Ali-Liston meeting became known as the "phantom punch," so named because most people in the arena did not see it. Even Ali was unsure as to whether the punch connected. Slow-motion replays show Ali connecting with a quick right to Liston's head as Liston was moving toward Ali. Liston was unsteady when he finally got to his feet, and the fight continued briefly with Ali connecting with four additional unanswered punches before the knockout was declared, ending the contest. The photograph is stamped "Wide World Photos" and "Box-Photo" on verso. 10 by 7 inches PROVENANCE From the Collection of Harlan Werner Categories:
