A black and white wire photograph of Muhammad Ali at the Houston, Texas, Armed Forces Induction Station in 1967. The photograph features Ali in a suit and tie picking up an envelope containing a statement regarding his induction proceedings, with press information at the bottom that reads “(HO4) Houston, Tex. April 28—Almost loses statement—Heavyweight/ champion Cassius Clay picks up an envelope he dropped during his/ entrance at the armed forces induction station in Houston today./ Clay said the envelope contained a statement he would make/ regarding his induction proceedings. He almost lost possession/ of the papers in the crowds that followed him into the building./ (AP Wirephoto) (dt60830stf-fk) 1967.” When Ali appeared for his scheduled induction into the U.S. Armed Forces on April 28, 1967, he refused three times to step forward at the call of his name. Warned by an officer that he was committing a felony, Ali again refused to respond when his name was called and was arrested. That same day, the New York State Athletic Commission stripped him of his title and suspended his license. Ali would not be able to obtain a license to box in the U.S. for over three years after being stripped of his title. 10 by 8 inches PROVENANCE From the Collection of Harlan Werner Categories:
