The former World Heavyweight Boxing Champion applied for a license to fight in California/ under his religious name, Muhammed Ali./ Credit (UPI Photo) 7/14/67.” Stripped of his license to box in April 1967 by boxing commissions throughout the U.S., Ali appealed to the California Athletic Commission for a license to defend his championship in a bout to take place in Oakland, California.
