A bronze medal from the 1960 Summer Olympics held in Rome, Italy. The medal was awarded to Italian boxer Giulio Saraudi, fighting in his home country, in the Light Heavyweight boxing class, the same weight class in which an 18-year-old Muhammad Ali (then Cassius Clay), representing the U.S., would defeat his opponent, Zbigniew Pietrzykowski of Poland, in the final bout to win the 1960 Olympic Boxing Light Heavyweight gold medal. Saraudi, born in the Italian port town of Civitavecchia, was awarded the bronze medal in the Light Heavyweight division after he was defeated by Pietrzykowski, the eventual silver medalist, in one of the two Light Heavyweight semifinal bouts. This medal was presented to Saraudi at the same ceremony in which Ali received his 1960 Olympic gold medal. The medal is one of only four medals presented in the Light Heavyweight class at the 1960 Rome Olympics with the others being Ali's gold, Pietrzykowski's silver, and a second bronze medal awarded to the loser of Ali's semifinal bout, Anthony Madigan of Australia. The bronze medal features a chain decorated with olive leaves and a medallion with a raised image of early Olympians above the engraved word “Pugilato.” The reverse of the medallion features an image of a woman in early Roman dress with lettering that reads “Giochi Della/ XVII Olimpiade/ Roma MCMLX.” PROVENANCE From the Collection of Harlan Werner Categories:
