A 16mm print of the silent film short Maud Muller (Tiffany-Stahl, Colorart Production, 1928) on double-perf Kodak color stock. This silent short, based on John Greenleaf Whittier's 1856 poem about unrequited love, was filmed in two-strip Technicolor by Ray Rennahan, known for his early expertise in the production of color motion pictures and later recipient of the Academy Award for Best Cinematography for the Technicolor classic Gone with the Wind (MGM, 1939). The setting of Maud Muller occurs roughly during the same time period as Gone with the Wind , as is evident in the costumes. William Dillon as the male lead, with his mustache and top hat, even bears a resemblance to Clark Gable's character, Rhett Butler. Tiffany Pictures remained in business for little more than a decade; its archive of original nitrate negatives was acquired by MGM and set on fire during the famous burning of Atlanta scene in Gone with the Wind , the scene that helped seal the Oscar win for Rennahan. Two other shorts were filmed by Rennahan in 1928 using the two-strip color process: The Toy Shop , also for Tiffany-Stahl, and The Love Charm , which was assumed lost until its recent discovery in New Zealand in 2011. This 16mm print of Maud Muller is a rare copy of an early color film shot by one of only six cinematographers to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Transfer of copyright is not included with this lot. PROVENANCE From the Collection of Lois Laurel Hawes Categories Read more…
