The race of Dwarves in Middle-earth arm themselves almost exclusively with weapons that draw upon their origins as miners including picks, hammers, mattocks and - primarily - axes and Gimli, the representative of the Dwarf nation among the Fellowship is no exception. He can be seen using a variety of axes in battle, including a hand axe, throwing axes and a short handled walking axe, but principle amongst his arsenal is the massive double headed Battle Axe of his forefather Balin. Recovered by Gimli from his ancestor’s tomb in the catacombs of Moria, this beautiful and lethal weapon became Gimli, son of Gloin’s tool of choice in battling the Orc and Uruk-hai hordes of Saruman and Sauron’s armies. Wielded by John Rhys-Davies throughout The Lord of the Rings (New Line Cinema, 2001, 2002, 2003) film trilogy, this hero version of Gimli the Dwarf’s favored weapon is extremely heavy and has been carefully crafted from metal and wood with a hand-woven leather grip and ornate detailing as befits the weapon of a Dwarf lord. This axe was one of eight main character props featured heavily in The Lord of the Rings that were given away as grand prizes in the “Win the Sword of Aragorn Sweepstakes” cross promotion between Hasbro Toys and New Line Cinema to promote the release of The Return of the King (New Line Cinema, 2003), in December 2003.
