Saruman the White was at one time the greatest of the Istari, the race of wizards who revered nature and used their skills and knowledge to help and guide the people of Middle-earth. By the Third Age, however, Saruman’s desire for power had corrupted him, leading him away from living things and towards metal and machinery. This obsession with the industrial was typified by the design and construction of his powerful wizard’s staff through which he channeled his strength in the service of Sauron. This prop staff was hand-painted and weathered by the skilled craftsman at Weta Workshop during the production of The Lord of the Rings (New Line Cinema 2001, 2002, 2003) and features a hand blown glass ball mounted on a wood and resin staff and surrounded by resin flanges modeled after Saruman’s fortress Isengard, the second of the two towers that formed such focus for the story. Used for wide shots during filming, particularly during the epic magical battle between Saruman and Gandalf in The Fellowship of the Ring (New Line Cinema, 2001) after Saruman’s betrayal, this staff differs slightly from the hero staff and features some minor wear and tear from use, including paint repair to the upper flanges that was conducted on set This prop was part of a collection of authentic production-created movie props procured by official New Line Cinema licensee, United Cutlery directly from Weta Workshop and Three Foot Six Productions between 1999-2004 for reference in producing a collectible
