An antique English dressing box previously owned by Sara Sothern, stage actress and mother of Elizabeth Taylor. Circa 1835, King William IV period, of rosewood or possibly kingwood, decorated with brass. Decorations include elaborate fine foliate brass inlay in a scrolled leaf design, quadrant brass edging, brass countersunk handles and a center brass monogrammed medallion on lid. Lock plate marked with a crown hallmark, for Sheffield, with a functioning lock and key. Case lined with ruched green velvet. The box contains a wood framed mirror, removable compartments covered in green leather with gilt designs and silk linings, a secret jewelry drawer, vanity and sewing accessories with mother of pearl handles, 12 cut glass toiletry and perfume jars with superb square cutting and silver lids all in varying sizes and shapes. The sterling silver lids are decorated with engraving, pierced filigree and engine turning (Guilloche). Silver hallmarked: Lion Passant mark (sterling silver mark for 1822 onward), T.D. makers mark (Thomas Dicks, London registered 1811), U date mark (1835), Uncrowned Leopard mark (London, 1822 onward), King William IV duty mark (1834-1837). This type of dressing box was very popular among the elite in the 19th century, used during travel and for extended visits. The boxes were also displayed in the home as a symbol of wealth and taste.
