A detailed pastel portrait of Rudolph Valentino in costume for his role as the Duke of Chartres in the film Monsieur Beaucaire (Paramount, 1924). Accompanied by a glass-framed press clipping from 1976 listing the accomplishments of the artist Lavrillier and heralding the artwork as one of the finest examples of portraiture in the world. The article goes on to describe how the previous owner, who purchased the painting shortly after Valentino’s death, first became acquainted with Valentino while working as a cameraman on the set of the now lost film Once To Every Woman (Universal FMC, 1920). It is reported that Valentino agreed to sit for the painting while Lavrillier was visiting Los Angeles during the 1920s. Signed upper right, "Gaston Albert Lavrillier." Not examined outside of frame. 37 by 32 inches, overall Categories:
