$19,200
A dark brown 3/4 wig custom made for Elizabeth Taylor in her breakout role in the Academy Award-winning film National Velvet (MGM, 1944). This wig was worn by Taylor as her character was attempting to pass for a boy, and the character had to cut her tresses; Taylor's locks were concealed in the wig. The wig is made of human hair and hand tied one strand of hair at a time to a lace mesh with silk bands in the interior to give the appearance of a scalp. Studio wigs at the time were custom made and fitted to measure by the star's head and hairline. An MGM label reads "539," and a Max Factor Studios label reads "8202" with a corresponding MGM wig stock record card typed "539 E.Taylor Dk. Brown 3/4 fall Prod. #1315." The wig was acquired from MGM upon the closure of its hair and wig department. Accompanied by a canvas wig block, a plastic travel case, and a copy of the film. Categories: Elizabeth Taylor
