A black Astrakhan Cossack hat worn by Rudolph Valentino in The Eagle (United Artists, 1926). The hat has a double-headed eagle silver bullion embroidered emblem with a crown and shield. The top is of blue grey felted wool embellished with a cross of lamé ribbons. "R. Valentino" is inscribed in marked to the leather interior hat band. Costume design by Adrian. The hat was awarded to Mrs. N. Swan for winning a 1926 Picture Show competition by writing a 100 word or shorter answer to "Why I like Valentino on the Screen." Accompanied by several correspondences regarding the contest, including one from Valentino's business manager, George Ullman, dated June 22, 1926, and one from The Amalgamated Press informing Mrs. Swan of her accomplishment; newspaper clippings regarding the contest and announcing Mrs. Swan as the winner; a February 20, 1926, Picture Show Arts Supplement "Souvenir of The Eagle "; and three vintage images of Valentino wearing the hat, including one framed, and a wood and glass display case.
