Originally a Maia spirit and a powerful black Sorcerer and Necromancer, the Dark Lord Sauron was for many thousands of years the single greatest threat to the peoples of Middle-earth, his unquenchable desire for power leading to the great wars of the second and third age and driving the world of Men to the brink of extinction. Rarely appearing in bodily form, Sauron took the battlefield one last time during the assault of Last Alliance between Elves and Men, heavily armored in plate and mail of his own unique design and crafted to inspire fear in his enemies. Jet black in color, some said scorched by the burning heat of his body, Sauron's armor was covered in lethal spikes and decorated with a sinuous intaglio decoration that appeared both industrial and eerily organic. Bringing the Dark Lord, Sauron to life required Weta Workshop to create two complete outfits for Sala Baker to wear: one full metal hero outfit and one stunt version made from polyurethane. This solid urethane version of Sauron's helmet was created from molds taken from the original hero helmet by the armory department at Weta Workshop during production of The Lord of the Rings trilogy (New Line Cinema, 2001, 2002, 2003). This lightweight version of the intimidating helm was hand painted and weathered by Weta craftsmen and has a leather-lined interior for the safety and comfort of actor Sala Baker, who wore this helmet during the elaborate combat sequences of the prologue of The Fellowship of the Read more…
