$1,280
A scarlet red wool cape made for John Barrymore as Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet (MGM, 1936). The cape has gold bullion raised embroidery work to the collar, a gold bullion cord to neckline, and a vintage brass button. Costume design by Adrian and Oliver Messel. While the piece is not seen in the film, it was worn for publicity images and believed to have been later worn in Barrymore's final film Playmates (RKO, 1941). A Western Costume label is inscribed "Barrymore 4C" with a Western Costume Co. stamp. Post-production alterations are present, including dying of the cape from the original ecru color. Accompanied by an original lot tag. Link to images available upon request.
