A deep garnet dressing robe worn by John Barrymore, as King Louis XV while dining with Gladys George as Madame Du Barry in Marie Antoinette (MGM, 1938). The robe is embroidered with gold bullion sprays of wheat and has a wild mink collar and cuffs and golden frog closures. Costume design by Gile Steele. Accompanied by a studio dickey inscribed "MGM" that is not original to the costume and a copy of the film. Additionally, featured in the American Movie Classics documentary The Hollywood Fashion Machine : Faded Sequins , Tattered Dreams , Saving Hollywood's Classic Costumes (AMC, 2000).
