The ancient sword of Elendil, the king of Men, Narsil was forged by a dwarven master smith in the First Age of Middle-earth. Its name in Elvish meant ‘Light of Sun’ and ‘Light of Moon’ and Elendil wielded Narsil with great skill upon the battlefields of Middle-earth until the blade was shattered by a strike from Sauron himself. It was with the jagged edge of this broken weapon that Elendil’s son, Isildur, sliced The One Ring from Sauron’s hand, greatly diminishing his power and destroying his physical form. The remaining shards of The Sword that was Broken were collected and guarded at the Elven realm of Rivendell, protected as an important relic and an heirloom for the ancestors of Isildur. Eventually the shards were reforged by Elrond’s people into Andúril, The Flame of the West, and presented to Aragorn, Isildur’s rightful heir, to signify his right to rule. These filming prop pieces were created from molds taken from the original hero Shards and were hand-painted and weathered by the skilled craftsman at Weta Workshop armory department during the production of The Lord of the Rings (New Line Cinema 2001, 2002, 2003). Cast in urethane, lightweight versions would have been used for stunt shots such as Isildur’s confrontation with Sauron and when Boromir drops the broken hilt of Narsil to the floor in The Fellowship of the Ring (New Line Cinema, 2001). This prop was part of a collection of authentic production-created movie props procured by official New Line Cinema license
