Bred in the mountains and dark places of Middle-earth, orcs shunned the daylight and often forged their helmets to protect their sensitive eyes. It is believed that the Orcs of Moria designed their jagged, pointed helmets to resemble the flaming mane of the terrible demon spirit who dwelled deep within the Mines of Moria, the ancient and terrible Balrog It was while travelling through the underground Dwarven city of Kazad-dûm, deep beneath the Misty Mountains that the Fellowship encountered a fearsome and feral band of orcs wearing armor featuring these distinctive, spiky helmets. This urethane stunt helmet with leather chinstrap and metal buckle was created from molds of the metal hero prop and was painted and extensively weathered by Weta Workshop’s armory department for use in filming The Fellowship of the Ring (New Line Cinema, 2001). 20 by 12 inches PROVENANCE This specific helmet, along with a selection of other filming props used in the production of The Lord of the Rings trilogy (New Line Cinema, 2001, 2002, 2003) was given by New Line Cinema to their licensee, Electronic Arts for reference use in producing video games based upon the blockbuster films.
