A print of a black and white photograph from 1952 depicting the Roy Campanella All-Stars. During the winter months, the off-season for Major League Baseball (MLB), many players would travel on "barnstorming tours" to play exhibition games in order to subsidize their income. In the 1950s, Brooklyn Dodgers legend Roy Campanella organized such tours in the off-season, arranging games of MLB players versus Negro League All-Stars. This photograph shows Campanella's All-Stars lining up with the Negro League's New York Cubans. The photograph is signed by MLB players Campanella, Larry Doby, Monte Irvin, Hank Thompson, Harry Simpson and George Crowe and by notable New York Cubans players Pat Scantlebury, J. Lefty Gaines and Kendell Mathis. 14 signatures total. The photograph is stamped "Ernest C. Withers/ Photographer/ Memphis" on verso. The photograph is accompanied by an original black and white photograph of Campanella being presented the 1953 R.J. Schaefer Award for setting the Dodgers' team record of 142 runs batted in during the 1953 MLB season. Also included are original black and white photographs of Don Newcombe, Monte Irvin and friends at a club in New York City in the 1950s. Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from JSA.
