A pair of Rick Griffin sketches for the Grateful Dead. The first is an Archibald McNeal Willard inspired sketch of three Revolutionary War era musicians, two with drums and the third who has opted for a guitar instead of a pipe. Lettering on the sketch reads "The Grateful Dead." This piece was a preliminary sketch for materials celebrating the Dead's 20th anniversary. The second is a Rembrandt inspired sketch ultimately used on a holiday card sent to fans by the Dead circa 1986. In the image, Griffin replaced Rembrandt's clothmakers' guild members with images of the band as skeletons. Both drawings are mixed media on tracing paper.
