A Rick Griffin signed ink on board drawing from a series of cartoons from the 1960s for Surfer magazine showing the fictitious adventures of Griffin and surf photographer Ron Stoner. Surfer published a total of 11 of Griffin's cartoons in the two years that the magazine ran the feature about the pair. In this cartoon, the pair find themselves in the middle of a stampede of people and cattle. The highly detailed drawing shows a flurry of activity behind the oblivious photographer Stoner, who is totally involved with his photography. Ron Stoner was as much of a photography celebrity as Griffin became a surf cartoon, and later rock art, celebrity, but with a very different end to his story. In 1977, after bouts of mental illness, Stoner was filed as a missing person and has not been located. The cartoons are a snapshot of Stoner's golden age. Framed, 15 1/2 by 25 inches; Image, 7 3/4 by 17 1/2 inches PROVENANCE Acquired from the Estate of Rick Griffin Categories: Rick Griffin
