Denis Adeane Mitchell (English, 1912 - 1993), "Trezza"- 1981, incised slate sculpture, inscribed on bottom of attached base "TREZZA 81 DAM". Slate sculpture of pentagonal form in the style of Mitchell's mentor, Barbara Hepworth (English, 1903-1975); front with polished, smooth slate, with incised circle in upper left corner, with incised diagonal line extending from lower right corner to just under incised circle form; back with raw, untreated slate; with black stone attached base. Approximate height with base 7.9", width 4", depth 2.75". Provenance: New Art Centre, London, whereby acquired by the Estate of Joseph Gilbert of Atlanta, Georgia in 1986. Copy of purchase receipt available upon request. Note: Denis Mitchell was a prominent figure in the St. Ives Modernists group, having worked in the studio of Barbara Hepworth (English, 1903-1975). Mitchell's work is in the permanent collections of the Tate Gallery, National Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia and the National Gallery of Wellington, New Zealand among other prominent institutions.
