A mixed media on board painting, executed by Alton Kelley, featuring the cover art for Mickey Hart's first solo album Rolling Thunder (Warner Bros. , 1972). Signed lower right. painted by Alton Kelley in 1987 to be displayed at the Artists Rights Today benefit concert at the old Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco. This art exhibition and music event was staged to raise awareness of the copyright situation on psychedelic posters from the 1960s. Kelley, Stanley Mouse, Rick Griffin, Victor Moscoso and other prominent artists were seeking rights to their old poster images. Jerry Garcia, John Cipollina and Country Joe were among the musicians who supported the artists and played at this event. Originally this image was created in a smaller format by Alton Kelley and Stanley Mouse and was reproduced on the front cover of Mickey Hart’s first solo album. It was recorded during a time when he was taking a break from playing drums for the Grateful Dead. For Kelley and Mouse the album cover art represented a milestone in their careers. The lettering and abstract calligraphic forms which form the circle reveal the skills they acquired from many years of creating innovative letter forms. The airbrushing on the heart, wings and glowing kaleidoscopic rainbow light glowing in the background is the result of the additional time it took to master the airbrush painting technique.
