A 1912 Olympic Merit Diploma awarded to the United States of America's Men's Swimming 4 x 200 freestyle relay team. The 1912 Summer Olympics was held in Stockholm, Sweden. Diplomas were awarded to the top eight finishers in events as well as to athletes who had notable performances. The diploma features color lithography with gold and blue accents. The diploma was designed by Olle Hjortzberg, professor at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm, and was printed by Centraltryckeriet, Stockholm. The diploma features the Greek goddess Athena wearing a crown and holding a staff and a statue of victory with Stockholm Olympic Stadium in the background. She is surrounded by a flower and a laurel leaf border. In Greek mythology, Athena is the patron goddess of heroic endeavor. The diploma reads "V. Olympiaden/ Olympiska Spelen i Stockholm 1912/ II Pris [second place]/ 800 meter laakappsimning [lap swimming]/ Forenta Staterna [United States]." The 1912 United States Olympic Men's 4 x 200 relay team consisted of swimmers Ken Huszagh, Harry Hebner, Perry McGillivray and Duke Kahanamoku. Framed.
