A woven wool jacket made for Walter Matthau, who plays Horace Vandergelder in Hello , Dolly ! (Chenault, 1969). The jacket is part of a three-piece suit that is constructed out of a brownish-gray woven wool with subtle blue stripes. The suit was made for the production, and the jacket was ultimately not worn on screen. An internal typed Western Costume Company label reads “Walet Matthau” [sic]. In the final scene and musical number of the film, all of the principal characters arrive at the hay and feed store to witness Matthau's character proposing to Dolly Levi, played by Barbra Streisand. For the duration of this entire scene/number, Matthau is wearing the matching pants and vest, having presumably just removed the jacket. Directed by Gene Kelly the film won three Academy Awards and received seven nominations in all, including Best Costume Design. Costume designer was Irene Sharaff. Accompanied by a letter of authenticity. Categories: Walter Matthau
