Watercolor, pencil, marker on illustration board, signed A. Vargas, three sketches believed to be from "The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex” (Warner Bros., 1939). The film starred Bette Davis and Errol Flynn and was nominated for five Oscars including Best Art Direction. Alberto Vargas is primarily known as a pin-up illustrator but these rare set design sketches come from the period between 1936–1939 when he worked at Warner Bros.
