Original, vintage blueprint titled “Fantasy Land Castle” that details “Sections of Passages” of Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty Castle. Labeled “Disneyland Inc.,” this blueprint was executed by “WED Enterprises, Inc.” Dated “2-12-55,” this blueprint of castle interiors lays to rest the myth that the centerpiece of Disneyland was initially intended to be an empty shell. Plans illustrate the highly detailed corridors and staircases that would have taken guests on a walk past various scenes in an effort of storytelling. For reasons of budget or time these interior plans were not realized until 1957, when the castle interior was finally utilized by Ken Anderson and Eyvind Earle with the debut of the Sleeping Beauty Castle Walkthrough attraction. These corridors and landings of 1955 roughly match the interior as executed in 1957. Peek-in windows that eventually showcased Earle’s vignettes are also present in these elevations. One notable change is the castle’s north-facing open porch and its exterior staircase that would have allowed guests to walk the outside parapet on the castle’s Fantasyland side. These spaces were enclosed in 1957, slightly altering the appearance of the castle. Also notable are the large, interior spaces described on the castle’s ground level as “Scene.” These large spaces on the bottom floor were eventually utilized as Disneyland gift shops and not for the castle’s walkthrough attraction.
