AN ENGLISH GILTWOOD CREST CARVED WITH THE MOTTO OF THE MOST NOBLE ORDER OF THE GARTER, 18TH/19TH CENTURY of oval form, the garter border with the motto HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE. Honi soit qui mal y pense is the motto of The Most Noble Order of the Garter and translates from Old French as “Shame upon him who thinks evil of it." Its history tracing back to mediæval times, The Most Noble Order of the Garter is the pinnacle of the British honors system. Membership is extremely limited, consisting of the reigning Sovereign (thus currently Queen Elizabeth II) and not more than twenty-five full members, or Companions. The Order can also include certain extra members (members of the British Royal Family and foreign monarchs), known as "Supernumerary" Knights and Ladies. The Queen alone grants membership to the Order, thus membership of the order is regarded as being the Sovereign's gift. Categories: Cher
