Glass tiles and copper on fiberglass. 10 by 3 1/2 feet The artist recalls: "What was most challenging was how heavy and awkward the guitar became very quickly. I would become stuck and unable to proceed because I couldn’t move it on my own... it took three firefighters, a therapist, a carpenter and two brothers to carry the thing and load it into the truck!" Aly Winningham is a passionate master of glass and skilled welder. Surrounded by art and artists as a child, she studied many forms of art before finding her true calling in metal and glass. She has been exploring these media in her East Austin studio for the past eight years. She opened Terra Firma Studios in 2002. Aly’s creativity is expressed through her dynamic mobiles, unique glass windows, hand-forged metal work, and mosaics. Motivated by artistic challenges, Aly is drawn to creating kinetic pieces and has a striking and unmistakable style. Her influences include Nikki St. Phalle, Antonio Gaudi, and Alexander Calder.
