A handwritten letter on Hotel De Crillon, Paris stationary to Cecil Beaton, reading in full "Beatie Boy, This is my last night in Paris. I am sitting here in the midst of suitcases and chaos. Some how it will be all packed by tomorrow and off we go, in the air. I am always terrified in planes but so are a lot of us. I shall take several strong things to drink and the Lord willing I will be in Manhattan soon. I am once more to say I am sorry to have you troubled. You will have wanted better comfort but that is all I can say. I am rather intoxicated and proud that I am able to write you, when I can [sic.] Please however bear in mind when I say I am intoxicated it is not very bad. I do hope I carry the whole thing rather "gentlemanly." Can't spell very well but that has nothing to do with whiskey. I shall look forward terribly much to see you soon. I send you my love and you'll be waiting , God willing." The letter is signed "Harriet" one of Garbo's best known pseudonyms. Garbo was exceptionally paranoid, and almost never used her actual signature in correspondence with friends. Also present is the original transmittal envelope dated 1956 as well as three British cigarette cards circa 1938. Beaton not only captured some of the most famous images of Garbo on film but was a close friend and one time lover of the reclusive actress. This letter clearly demonstrates the intimate nature of their lifelong friendship. 7 by 5 1/4 inches Categories: Greta Garbo
