A collection of VistaVision special effects elements and composits on VistaVision film (from the Empireflex system) used extensively in the production of the battle scenes on Hoth, the asteriod field and Cloud CIty, (among others) in Star Wars Episode V : The Empire Strikes Back (Lucasfilm/20th Century, 1980). Shot on the bluescreen special effects stage at Kerner Company Optical Research Lab, San Rafael, California in 1979. Footage was used during production as elements, composits and test footage to create the optical effects utilizing the models created by the model shop. Includes different stages of matte work and bluescreen shots of Darth Vader’s Super Star Destroyer "Executor," Imperial Star Destroyer, Cloud City car, TIE fighters, asteroids from the asteroid field the Millennium Falcon and Imperial Destroyer fly through, snowspeeders used during the battle on Hoth, rear views of Darth Vader, The Millenium Falcon, star fields, the clouds of Cloud City (which, in the completed sequence, the Millenium Falcon and other cloud city verhicles are seen flying through), as well as shots of the asteroid where Han Solo lands the Millennium Falcon in a cavity. Models can clearly be seen both mounted, hanging and even being hung from poles by team members. Many of the frames of these iconic shots and models can been seen in books about ILM and The Empire Strikes Back, as well as seen and described in several of the documentaries.
