A United States passport signed and extensively used by Ed Sullivan from 1953 to 1957. Present inside is a 2 ½ by 2 ½ inch black and white head and shoulders portrait photograph of a 52 year old Sullivan together with his signature, appearing twice in bold black ink. Interestingly, the Television impresario lists his occupation as “Newspaperman and TV.” Prior to his success as a television host Sullivan was a newspaper sportswriter and theatre columnist. Passport contains dozens of Visa and related immigration stamps from throughout the world. Sullivan’s long running stint as the stone faced host of the weekly variety series “Toast of the Town” (later in 1955, known as the “Ed Sullivan Show”) was broadcast on CBS from 1948–1971, featuring headliners including Bo Diddley, Elvis Presley, and The Beatles. The well remembered vaudeville style show was broadcast from CBS’s Studio 50 in New York City, which was renamed the Ed Sullivan Theater in 1967 (currently the home of The Late Show with David Letterman). Please note: cover and first page clipped at bottom right corner, most likely to acknowledge its cancellation, which is hand written across pages two and three. Also present is a solid gold coin presented to Sullivan from the Pope (c.1966), having an inscription on the verso reading: “Mr. Interfaith In Action/Ed Sullivan/September 28, 1966” measuring 1 3/8 width, set in custom Lucite casing of larger size. 3 6/8 by 6 1/8 inches.
