Color photograph of Marilyn Monroe sitting in red toile with black lingerie by Philippe Halsman, circa 1950. This photograph was one of a series done by Halsman that featured the new studio actresses in 1949-1950. Marilyn posed in a variety of ways including several in lingerie. Here Marilyn is as a 24 year old starlet, hair not light blonde, and before she developed the “Marilyn Monroe” character fully. Philippe Halsman (1906-1979) set the standard for celebrity portraiture for the decades between 1940 and into the 1970s. Born in Latvia, he moved to Paris in the 1930s and established his career as a photographer by contributing to Vogue and other fashion magazines. In 1940 he moved to New York and within two years had his first cover photograph for Life. That established a 30 year association with Life who ultimately published 101 covers with his photographs. A great photographer and one who belongs very much within the magazine era, when America’s stories were told through vivid images in large periodicals. Photographer Cristina Arce Venegas said of Halsman,: “His subjects create a vivid picture of prosperous American society in the middle years of this century and he captures the laughter, high spirits and glamour of his time, as well as its intense emotions and true optimism.” 14 by 11, inches Categories: Marilyn Monroe
