Color poster signed by photographer Richard Avedon Marilyn Monroe posed for photographer Richard Avedon as five original sex symbols of the silver screen stars, Clara Bow, Jean Harlow, Theda Bara, Lillian Russell, and Marlene Dietrich. These images are known as the “Fabled Enchantress Series” and was published in Life magazine in the 1962 issue. Clara Bow (1905-1965) was the original “IT” girl, known as a famous silent screen star and sex symbol. Born in a tenement in Brooklyn, Clara lived in poverty until she entered and won the Motion Picture Magazine's Fame and Fortune contest in 1921, the grand prize being a part in a film. This led her into Hollywood silent film career where she became a legend. Her life foreshadowed many difficulties later stars would endure when talented, beautiful people also suffer from addiction and mental illness. Adolph Zukor said that Clara “danced even when her feet weren’t moving.” Her vitality, enthusiasm, and beauty, like Marilyn’s, ensured both would become legends. 28 by 20 inches Categories: Marilyn Monroe
