A Catherine Walker burgundy velvet ball gown. The off-the-shoulder gown features unique zippers beginning at shoulders and ascending down each arm, perfectly fitted with a gathered appearance; side zipper also present. The bodice consists of crossed and gathered fabric, ending at a gathered waist skirt. The underskirt is shaped by layers of black tulle; black satin lining throughout. Princess Diana wore this dress to a 1989 event at the French Embassy honoring the French ambassador, Viscount Luc de La Barre de Nanteuil. The current consignor has loaned out this gown for various philanthropic endeavors including: Diana Princess of Wales: Dresses for a Cause and A Date With Diana and it appears in the book Princess Diana: Dresses of Inspiration from the exhibition at The von Liebig Art Center in Naples, Florida. Catherine Walker was a favorite designer of the Princess. Walker presented Diana in regal gowns, sending subtle signals through the Princess' attire that the person wearing her clothing was destined to be the future Queen of England. For Diana's part, her goal was not to disappoint and made clothing choices that would delight her audiences.
