An X-ray taken at New England Baptist Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, of John F. Kennedy's Anterior posterior view of lumbar spine, marked "Kennedy, Mr. John/ 10031/ 9-6-51." This X-ray was taken during Kennedy's third term as congressman for Massachusetts. Damage to his collapsed lumbosacral spine is evident, as is residue of pantopaque contrast medium used in earlier studies to examine the space around his spinal cord. Kennedy quietly and privately suffered with back pain that required daily medication. His pain was made worse by his affliction of Addison's disease.
