A handwritten poem by Johnny Cash regarding his thoughts on the Vietnam War, one page, dated October 24, 197 (remainder of year absent). The untitled poem reads in full, "I heard on the news / That there is a lull in the fighting / In Vietnam / Because so many Vietnamese / Are busy planting / A rice crop again / The report said / That full scale fighting / Is expected to resume / Immediately after the planting season / I reply: / What kind of animal is man / That he would pause / In his killing / In order to go about business / Of preparing for the living / Knowing / That he will immediately return / To the business of killing." Written in black ink but initialed at the conclusion "J.C." in blue ink. Marked "Book" at the top of the page, this poem was originally selected by Cash to be featured in a compilation story/poetry book he was working on during that time that was never completed. 14 by 8 1/2 inches Categories: Johnny Cash
