The John Wooden Award is presented annually to the college basketball player of the year. The Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts, and the Amateur Athletic Foundation in Los Angeles house permanent trophies. The front plate is engraved “Los Angeles Athletic Club” and “John R. Wooden Award” together with the names of past winners, the most recent being 1984’s “Michael Jordan, University of North Carolina.” The design of the trophy was inspired by legendary coach John Wooden’s notion of the total basketball player: one who rebounds, passes, defends, shoots, and dribbles. The figures on the trophy are cast, hand-polished, soldered together, and electroplated to the base. The figures are made of a zinc alloy and stand atop a pentagon base that is copper plated, nickel plated, copper plated again, then bronze plated for the polished finish. This is the original trophy that was presented to Michael Jordan for being named college basketball player of the year. After the awards ceremony, the trophy was shipped to Jordan. However, when he received it, it was damaged. He returned this trophy to the manufacturer and the manufacturer sent him a new trophy and kept this one. Thus explaining Jordan's name being the last engraved into this particular trophy in 1984. The trophy weighs more than 25 pounds. 17 3/4 by 12 3/8 inches 11 by 8 1/2 inches Categories:
