A medal, likely made of bronze, presented to participants (athletes and officials) in the 1908 London Olympics. The medal, designed by Bertram Mackennal and minted by P. Vaughton & Sons, shows on the obverse a chariot drawn by four horses with a driver and a judge preparing to reward the winning athlete the victory palm. The reverse shows Winged Fame holding palm or laurel branch and horn and standing on the globe with the following annotation: “ELLIS ATHENS PARIS ST. LOUIS LONDON IN COMMEMORATION OF THE OLYMPIC GAMES HELD IN LONDON 1908.” The obverse image was, at the time, intended to appear on all participants’ medals minted for future Olympic games. Mintage believed to be less than 5,000. Encased in wood frame, with velvet lining, which allows both sides of the medal to be seen. The medal is approximately 50mm in diameter and 5mm thick.
