A French promotional sign for the Charlie Chaplin film Le Cirque (United Artists, 1928). The sign is painted on wood with a stylized image of Chaplin based on the U.S. film poster. The sign reads, "Le Cirque/Charlie Chaplin/United Artists." The Circus was Chaplin's last truly silent movie. Chaplin starred as the lovable tramp who through happenstance finds his way into the circus and falls in love with the owner's daughter. The film made more than $3.8 million in 1928.
