Tile, Glass and Mortar on Fiberglass. Juliana Martinez is originally from Puerto Rico but grew up mainly in Los Angeles. She loves it here; she loves it there. She did her first mosaic when she was 9 and was hooked; she has been doing them ever since. She also paints, but not as well. She is married, has four natural children, one adopted son, and four grandchildren. She lives in Canoga Park, California, where she also has a studio. She currently does public art pieces and also accepts private commissions. She loves this project. Unfortunately, she didn’t get “discovered” until she was 52 years old, so she is working at warp speed to get a lot in. The upside is that they didn’t wait to discover her until after she was dead. She was a hippie, the peace and anti-war kind (lots of far-out discussions about passive resistance, Pete Seeger concerts, and eating macro-biotic food, even though she wanted to go to Lawry’s and eat prime rib in her heart of hearts). She raised her children this way and still holds the same principles dear. Her piece is about LOVE. It is a constant. It was there before 1967, and it is still here and there, but that summer computers hadn’t taken over, hearts were light, music was everywhere, and this side of the world was a place of wonderment if you looked in the right places.
