A letter and New York Times front page clipping from a fan shortly after the death of Charlie Chaplin. The front of the envelope is simply addressed "To: Late Charlie Chaplin, Sfitzerland." The back of the envelope has the name of the sender and his New York address. The letter is dated December 257th, 1977, two days after the passing of Chaplin. Hand-written by fan George V, Bajenica, the letter contains a simple, heartfelt message in broken English, "Goodbye Charlie, My salute to you for ever you great emperor of ours world working class. (signed) A statelessman, Ex 'Service' man, George V, Bajenica." Also included by Bajencia is a clipping from the New York Times reporting on the death of Chaplin with a silhouetted image of the Little Tramp character walking away from the camera on a lonely road. Underneath, the headline, "Charlie Chaplin Dead at 88; Made the Film an Art Form." Bajencia makes notes similar to his letter on the newspaper clipping but in closing adds, "From a stranger - one of your best friends on Earth." 8 by 10 inches PROVENANCE Lot #94, "Charlie Chaplin in His Time," Pierre-Yves Gabus, Gallery of Ancient Art, Hotel President, Geneva, February 27, 1993 Categories: Charlie Chaplin
