A New England Piano Company upright piano from The Record Plant, New York City, played by John Lennon and others. The piano has multiple modifications and has been professionally restored, serial number 71904. Accompanied by a typed, signed letter of authenticity from record producer and recording engineer Jack Douglas on Record Plant Studios letterhead. In the letter, Douglas states that he was a staff engineer at Record Plant Studios from 1969 to 1976. He lists the musicians who used this piano on album recordings, including Lennon, who played it on "Watching the Wheels" and on his Double Fantasy album from 1980. Lennon played the piano so often that the studio dubbed it "The John Lennon Piano." On occasion, Lennon also played this piano with Elton John and David Bowie. Don McLean played it for his 1976 song "American Pie," Rick Derringer on his group's 1977 album Sweet Evil , Alice Cooper on three of his records, and Patti Smith on the Patti Smith Group's 1976 album Radio Ethiopia . The piano was also used on Cheap Trick's first album and Aerosmith's 1974 Get Your Wings album. Lou Reed, Judy Collins, and Bob Dylan have also played the piano. Also accompanied by a letter of authenticity signed by piano technician Sam Berd, on Record Plant Studios letterhead, dated June 11, 1996, stating that the piano was removed from the wall of the studio when the studio closed for business.
