A James Dean abstract painting, acrylic on canvas, circa 1954. The biomorphic abstract image is painted in deep red, shades of brown and blue. The canvas stretchers do not appear to be professional and may have been made by Dean himself. The painting was given to the current owner by Jack Simmons, an actor, friend, and at one time, roommate of Dean's. Simmons played the role of "Cookie" in Rebel Without a Cause (Warner Bros., 1955) Dean is known for his sketches, many created on napkins, while at Googies coffee shop. Googies, located next to Schwab’s Pharmacy in Hollywood, was a meeting place for Dean and his friends. In addition to sketching, Dean was painting. Biographers of Dean's have noted his multifaceted creative endeavors including painting, photography, and dabbling in sculpting and dance. 66 by 96 inches Categories: James Dean
