A Starfleet duty tunic from the original Star Trek series (Desilu Productions, 1966-1969). This shirt is consistent in all ways with the style of tunic worn by Captain James T. Kirk, played by William Shatner, and marked "BILL" on the tag. Made from gold velour fabric with a black collar, an original Command division Starfleet insignia patch (a star with an elongated top point) is sewn on the left chest area. The braids around the wrist area are also consistent with the style of uniform worn by Captain Kirk. There is a label on the collar with "BILL" handwritten (suggesting the possibility of William "Bill" Shatner usage). While everything about this costume is consistent with the style worn by William Shatner as Captain Kirk, it may have been worn by someone portraying a different character, or by a stunt man, although the tag reading "BILL" likely short for William (Shatner) would suggest that of Kirk's. In the first two seasons of the series, the costumes were made of velour, but production found that it shrank and tore easily following dry cleaning, so in the third and final season, costumes were instead made of nylon fabric. As such, it is certain that this tunic was made for the second season (the braids were going in the direction consistent with season two).
