A group of three X-rays taken at New England Baptist Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, of John F. Kennedy. The first is labeled "5" and shows his left posterior oblique - lumbar spine, marked, "Kennedy, Hon John/ 10031/ 5-13-52," taken prior to a radical spine surgery involving "plate in situ" that Kennedy underwent at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. The second is labeled "3" and shows the anterior posterior view of lumbar spine, marked "Kennedy, Mr. John/ 10031/ 9-6-51," taken during Kennedy's third term as congressman for Massachusetts. Damage to his collapsed lumbosacral spine is evident, as is residue of pantopaque contrast medium used in earlier studies to examine the space around his spinal cord. Kennedy quietly and privately suffered with back pain that required daily medication. His pain was made worse by his affliction of Addison's disease. The third is labeled "4" and shows his left posterior oblique - lumbar spine, marked "Kennedy, Mr. John/ 10031/ 9-6-51"; this is the second image of a 1951 study of Kennedy's spine. Damage from his heroic efforts aboard the Motor Torpedo Boat PT-109, previous surgery and contrast medium from previous X-rays are evident in this X-ray.
