A pair of Ringo Starr stage used drumsticks that are believed to have been used for the 1964-1965 Christmas shows at the Hammersmith Odeon. The vintage drumsticks are made entirely of wood with teardrop tips. The sticks were awarded in April 1965 to Miss Joyce Kennedy as the prize winner in the “Fifth Beatles Book Competition” from the Beatles fan club members magazine The Beatles Book (also known as The Beatles Monthly ). The contest involved creating a caption for a photograph of Paul McCartney. Kennedy won the drumsticks, £10, and a Beatles guitar string for her caption “Poor Lennon! I knew him well.” In the early days of The Beatles, very few fans could get near the epically popular band, let alone receive a drumstick. At that time in music history, drumsticks were not thrown to the crowd as they are now. For this reason, exceptionally few stage played drumsticks have been available to Beatles collectors, fewer still sets of drumsticks, and even fewer from the early days of the band. Accompanied by a copy of The Beatles Book magazine from February 1965 with an ad announcing the contest; a copy of The Beatles Book magazine from April 1965 announcing Kennedy as the winner of the contest; a letter of authenticity from contest winner Joyce Kennedy; and a ticket stub for The Beatles' January 5, 1965, Christmas show.
