A day dress worn by Marla Gibbs as Florence Johnston in the television series The Jeffersons (Embassy Television, 1975-1985). The vintage day dress with blue, teal and white floral print pattern is trimmed in teal and has two lower patch pockets and a matching self belt. Attached to the garment is a costumer tag inscribed “W1960s, B36, W25 ½, green/white/cyan, belt, W 65." Gibbs wears this dress throughout “George and Jimmy” (Season 4, Episode 20) while helping George Jefferson (played by Sherman Hemsley) contact the president of the United States in order to coax him into participating in a publicity stunt for George’s business. The dress can be seen again in “Louise’s Sister” (Season 5, Episode 13) when she is helping George prepare a party where wife Louise (played by Isabel Sanford) will be reunited with her estranged sister. This costume includes copies of the continuity images for both episodes. The Jeffersons was an American sitcom broadcasted on CBS and was a spin-off from the sitcom All in the Family (Norman Lear/Tandem, 1971-1979). The Jeffersons “moved on up” to the upper east side of Manhattan and began living as an affluent black family. The series ran for 11 seasons for a total of 253 episodes, making The Jeffersons one of the longest running sitcoms in U.S. history. The show is also noteworthy for its addressing of controversial topics that included racism, suicide, and gun control, a move considered taboo for syndicated television in the 1970s. The show
