$25,600
A first state copy of the “Butcher" cover owned by Starr. The back cover features a vintage “Ringo” signature in blue ink, inner sleeve present, no record is present. The 1966 album cover was to be used on the Capitol Records United States release of the album. 60,000 copies were sent out, and were ill received by retailers and radio stations. Capitol Records was forced to recall the albums and paste over the “Butcher” cover with the so-called “Trunk Cover.” All subsequent copies were then printed with the trunk cover. In an interview, John Lennon recounted that at the time of the shoot the band was tired of photo shoots. Lennon explained that the photographer, Roger Whitaker, was “a bit of surrealist” and the band enjoyed the shoot as well as the image. Later Lennon was quoted as saying the cover was a comment on the Vietnam War, that “If the public can accept something as cruel as the war, they can accept this cover.” Roger Whitaker is quoted as saying that, “The actual conception for what I still call ‘Somnambulant Adventure’ was Moses coming down from Mount Sinai with the Ten Commandments. He comes across people worshipping a golden calf. All over the world I'd watched people worshiping like idols, like gods, four Beatles. To me they were just stock standard normal people. But this emotion that fans poured on them made me wonder where Christianity was heading.” 12 3/8 wide by 12 7/16 high Categories: Ringo Starr
