NOLA , 2009 Screenprint on paper Signed in pencil lower right "Banksy" Numbered in pencil lower left "45/289" with POW blindstamp 21 1/2 by 29 3/4 inches AUTHENTICATION Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Pest Contro l Three years after Hurricane Katrina, Banksy appeared in New Orleans to execute a suite of stencils that poignantly addressed the devastation and lack of appropriate political response following the flood. Shortly thereafter Umbrella Girl or NOLA (a colloquial name for New Orleans) appeared on a cement building. The stencil featured a young girl who having relied on her umbrella for protection only discovers that the umbrella itself is the source of the rain. The rendering poetically reflected on how the Louisana people themselves relied on the levees for protection only to have their destruction cause even further flooding. Later that year the popular stencil was used to create an additional series of prints differentiated by the use of multi-colored streaks of rain but bearing the same title.
